Notably, the number of cybersecurity-related patent applications in the automotive industry was 2,641 in Q1 2024, versus 3,144 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 14% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Huawei Investment filed the most cybersecurity patents within the automotive industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 84 cybersecurity-related patents in the quarter, compared with 150 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Robert Bosch Stiftung with 79 cybersecurity patent filings, Qualcomm (79 filings), and Samsung Group (68 filings) in Q1 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 34% share of total patent filings
The largest share of cybersecurity related patent filings in the automotive industry in Q1 2024 was in the US with 34%, followed by China (32%) and Japan (5%). The share represented by the US was 3% higher than the 32% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
