Over half (56%) of UK OEMs are using artificial intelligence (AI) machine vision in vehicle manufacturing compared to 43% of German OEMs, according to a new report.
Zebra Technologies‘ AI Machine Vision in the Automotive Industry Benchmark Report, which surveyed 250 automotive leaders each in the UK and Germany, found that AI machine vision is being used by 62.5% of tier 1 suppliers in the UK, 44.44% of tier 2 suppliers and 56% of OEMs.
It also revealed large differences in machine vision adoption across the supply chain. 21% of OEM respondents in the UK say they plan to automate more than half of their visual inspection activities using machine vision, compared to 41% of tier 1 and 51% of tier 2 suppliers.
Machine vision is being used across quality inspections, traceability of parts, gauging and measurement, metrology, presence/absence checks and porosity inspection. Zebra’s survey found that the technology is used most extensively in end-of-line and quality inspections and traceability of parts across the supply chain among UK OEMs.
Globally, Toyota topped the AI machine vision patent application leaderboard in November 2023 and has been found to lead in smart factory innovation within the automotive industry, according to GlobalData’s patent analytics. In the UK, Jaguar Land Rover came out on top, applying for 46 patents in AI machine vision in November.
Last year, Toyota Motor North America partnered with Invisible AI to use machine vision AI to make more intelligent decisions regarding quality, safety and productivity across 14 North American manufacturing locations. Jaguar Land Rover has also long used automated vehicle inspection solutions, using a patented combination of structured lighting, bright field and dark field technology to enable AI algorithms to identify defects on vehicles.
