General Motors (GM) is a US headquartered automotive corporation that is recognized in six categories in the 2022 Just Auto Excellence Awards.
The company has been working hard to bring forth and popularize its innovative new Ultium vehicle platform, revealing their group of three all-new motors that will power it’s Ultium-based EVs. The 180 and 255-kW units are permanent magnet motors designed with the aim of minimizing reliance on heavy rare earth materials while the 62-kW unit is an induction motor.
GM has also been working to expand battery cathode production forming a joint venture with another company to invest $400m to build a jointly owned plant in Becancour in the Canadian province of Quebec to supply cathodes to Ultium Cells. The company has also collaborated on EV backup power and self-driving technology.
The company has also been working to develop a sustainable supply chain for materials signing a non-binding memorandum of understanding to evaluate opportunities to improve supplies of heavy and light rare earth materials and magnets, copper and electrical steel used for manufacturing of electric vehicles and renewable energy equipment.
Elsewhere the company has been investing through its venture capital arm in Oculii , a US startup maker of software for radar sensors used in self-driving cars. The company also made an additional $1.35 billion investment in Cruise, the autonomous rideshare startup.
The company has been active in investing in EV battery technology production and R&D expansion with a new facility that it says will significantly expand the company’s battery technology operations and accelerate development and commercialization of longer range, more affordable electric vehicle batteries. The company also invested $51m to install equipment at its Bedford, Indiana aluminium die casting foundry to manufacture drive unit castings for the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV and other current casting applications, and $2.6bn to build a third Ultium cells factory in Lansing.
